So we decided to end up in Las Vegas for the WPPI show! We had originally decided that we wouldn't go because after all... WE AREN'T WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS! But, Casie Shimansky from Rebel Belle Photography, Ron Henry from BlackRapid and Amber from Westcott where all going to be there, so why not take advantage of the situation and meet up with some cool people! And after all, it was Las Vegas, I'm sure we could find something to do if the show sucked!

Luckily the show was pretty cool, I wouldn't say it's the most amazing show I've ever been too, but it definitely has it's place! We ran into a whole bunch of lightenupandshooters and because of that we decided to have a photoshootogether and hit the Las Vegas Strip to do some shooting! We twittered, facebooked and yelled to get the word out! Ron said he would be glad to give BlackRapid straps away, so that brought even more people!
It was an awesome time shooting around the strip in total lightenupandshoot style! We approached strangers, found cool locations and realized one very big thing - EVERYONE THAT COMES TO LAS VEGAS STAYS ON THAT STRIP!
So in total lightenupandshoot style, we had a great idea for a video called - LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE!
To us, photography is adventure. We love leaving the studio not knowing where we are going to end up. To us, this is leaving the comfort zone. When we ended up in Las Vegas shooting on the strip, we realized that
everyone that comes to Vegas stays on the strip. After all where else will you be able to get a buffet dinner 24 hours a day while playing blackjack and having Elvis serenade you into breakfast time. My point is that everyone that comes to Las Vegas...well comes to Las Vegas!

We wanted to explore, we've done the strip, we've lost at blackjack, we saw the show...now what? Well, we leave our comfort zone, that's what!
We had talked to some locals and instead of asking what was cool in the city to shoot, we asked what was outside of the city! We probably asked 20 people and they all said the normal things like the Grand Canyon and so on...until we ran into Mark! Mark was a photographer and he told us of this place called Nelson.
Nelson, Nevada is a photographers paradise! It's only about 20 minutes outside of the city and the town is home to 40 people! YES I SAID 40 PEOPLE!
Holy crapola, we're totally there!

We recruited:
Casie Shimansky from Rebel Belle Photography
Hardy WIlson from Hardywilson.com
Dennis Viera from Viera Photographics
and Mikey and I!

We all piled into a rental car ($50.00 for a day rental is about 2 hands at a blackjack table, just think about that when you come to Vegas) and Nelson bound we went! We stopped and picked up some sandwiches and water and headed to the dessert!
Let me just tell you how amazing that day was, if we never left our Las Vegas Strip Comfort Zone we would never have experienced it. We ended up at a place called EL DORADO MINE TOURS, which is run by Tony Werly ( http://www.eldoradocanyonminetours.com ) . This pleace is amazing, it's an abandoned Gold Mine that Tony mantains with tours and canoe and kayak rentals. For you photographers out there with commercial work, he also rents the place out by the day. I'm telling you the mix of rust, sand and all those faded colors are something that is so hard to find it's ridiculous. Definitely put this in your little black book! He has it full of rusted old stuff, even an airplane tail that is sticking out of the ground!
In any case, the point of this entire post is that many times we miss amazing opportunites because we never leave our comfort zone! If we would have done the usual Las Vegas trip we would never have ended up anywhere else than the STRIP! We would have missed the pleasure of meeting Tony and shooting in one of the coolest places we have ever shot!
So this brings us to YOU! We want YOU to leave your comfort zone and show us the results. You can either post your pictures in the comments section or our forum! We want to see how you leave your comfort zone and get some great images out of it! We are going to choose someone after a few weeks and do a story on them. So make sure you get out and LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE!
Now we are not saying, go break any laws (unless the photo is worth it), just get out there and do something that is not your usual. Whether it's talking to strangers, changing your regular route or simply changing your photographic style. Whatever it is we want to see and hear about it. We want you out shooting!
Like always, if you have any questions, just leave a comment!
A lot of sites review the latest gadgets and gear that supposedly will make you a better photographer. I think it's time to do the opposite and review a great piece of glass from the past. In 1986 Nikon released it's first AF telephoto zoom, the 70-210 f4. The glass is just as beautiful today as it was back in 1986 and there are a few advantages of owning one of these gems. Read more after the jump:

The 70-210 f4 has a constant f4 aperture, meaning that the f4 aperture remains constant even when zoomed out to 210mm. In addition to the constant f4 aperture the 70-210 has fast autofocus, very little chromatic aberration, focusses closer than any other Nikon non-micro telephoto zoom, and as of Jan 2011 can be found for under $200. If you are in the market for a fantastic telephoto zoom then consider the 70-210 f4 versus the new 70-200 2.8 VR (which is over $2,000 new). Nothing against expensive glass and if you have the dough then be my guest to the latest gear, but I have taken some wonderful images with this little beauty and I am not too concerned with being limited to f4. A great piece of glass is a great piece of glass in my book! Things to consider: Nikon made the 70-210 f4 - 5.6 which has slower autofocus and different glass; the quality is said to be considerably less, so be sure to make sure you know what you are buying.

The 70-210 is was also built like a tank; really well made and hardly any barrel distortion. Also, I read a really funny review that said this lens has horrible lens flare and be sure to use a lens hood. I am pleased when I can get some cool flare which is practically impossible on the newer lenses that have all that nano-coating jive! Enjoy the video and feel free to comment if you have any questions.
Recently I have discovered two very different street photographers who spent the greater part of their lives dedicated to their work and what I have learned most after studying their images is the importance of story telling. I present to you two unique street photographers, Eugene Richards and Vivian Maier.

Eugene Richards, an accomplished photographer printed in major magazines such as Life, National Geographic and Esquire and author of 15 important photography books. Well worth exploring are Exploding into Life, Richards chronicles his first wife’s battle with breast cancer, A Procession with Them, documents the plight of the world’s mentally disabled and Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, an indepth and intimate look at the embattled inhabitants of three troubled communities around New York City. The photographs tell the stories; a sample from each book is on his site Eugenerichards.com
Vivian Maier, a private and reclusive woman who was a prolific in taking photographs from the streets of Chicago for nearly 40 years, but never shared her work with anyone. Maier was recently discovered after her death and contents from her storage unit was sold at an auction. The man who purchased the belongings from her estate discovered over 100,000 negatives taken from the 1950s-1990s. Now he is slowly scanning her body of work for all to see and a small collection is being displayed at the Chicago Cultural Center through the spring of 2011. I wonder how Vivian would have felt knowing her work is being displayed for all to see? I have gained inspiration and knowledge from each of these amazing photographers, but what I have learned most from their images is the importance of telling a story through photographs. I hope you gain as much insight I as I have from Eugene Richards and Vivian Maier.
Behind the Scenes Shoot for BlackRapid . Lightenupandshoot.comA behind the scenes look at a photo shoot for BlackRapid Straps and CD Artwork for Paul Andrews. Shot at a castle built in the 1930's in Medellin, Colombia. "El Castillo" was inspired by a gothic castle from France. Check out Blackrapid.com for the new RS-Sport strap and Culturasparalelas.blogspot.com to see Paul Andrews in parkour action. The last picture in this post was shot by Johanna who loves to do multiple exposures. I thought it suited my personality. Lightenupandshoot! Mikey

Guess what?
To the photographer, THE IMAGE NOW SUCKS, HE/SHE SUCKS AS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND THE UNIVERSE HAS SHIFTED AND MADE THE ASSHOLE THE CENTER OF IT!

So let us just clear this up:

Now there are things like constructive criticism and professional suggestions that will help you become a better photographer, but in NO WAY does that mean your image SUCKS!

Ok, so how do you know which is which. It's simple actually. Just take a look at the photos of the person that critiqued you. If you think THEY SUCK...well just smile and never think about them again because they are just talking because they have nothing better to do. If they are good photos and you can respect them as a photographer, take it as constructive criticism or a professional suggestion. Try to do better, but in NO WAY does your present image suck! We all start somewhere, and we all have room to improve, but we don't improve if you don't have the confidence that you can.

One of the things that we can not stand about the internet is that it has created these internet trolls that do nothing more than want to ruin peoples day. They think their way is scripture and if you don't see eye to eye, then they will get their thrill off by belittling you. These people are simply ridiculous.

In any case, there are so many photographic rules that work, and they've worked very well since the beginnings of photography. But, and it's a huge but, if photographers never broke the rules photography would not progress! So we say...break the rules sometimes, experiment, develop your style and be confident about it.

The rules of photography should be renamed to, photographic suggestions. Rules sound so definite that people misunderstand. If they were rules it would mean that there is NO WAY to have a good photograph unless you followed them, and that is simply NOT THE CASE!

So are we telling you to always break the rules, NO! Are we telling you that you shouldn't know the rules, NO! Are we telling you breaking the rules can work, YES!

We don't want to single out any photographers, so check out your favorite one's. We can almost guarantee that they will have at least one image in their portfolio that breaks the rules!

Keep this in mind folks, photography, like almost everything else on this planet is a fad based industry. You will love pictures today that you will hate tomorrow.

On a final note, if there is a case where you love the image and 300 people are telling you it sucks...well simply name yourself an ARTIST and not a photographer and that will end the discussion since ART IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER!

So what is the point behind all this babble? Be confident and don't let internet trolls with really bad photography interfere with your style!

This is a life lesson, be confident with yourself, your images and just about everything else. Be confident enough to be able to smell out the assholes from the crowd and let whatever comes out of them simply fade away into the internet wind!

Rant over!

Now go and take some more of those sucky images and post'em on our site, our flickr group or wherever else you want!

LIGHTEN UP AND SHOOT!

Oh, if you don't believe us...check out one of my favorite posts ever written:

http://theonlinephotographer.blogspot.com/2006/06/great-photographers-on-internet.html

part 2

http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2009/11/great-photographers-on-the-internet-part-ii/comments/page/2/

P.S.

The kick ass music you are hearing is from Jeremy Buck and the Bang, check them out at http://jeremybuck.com/
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7424098964306344476.post-69656579316873930532010-10-07T11:59:00.000-04:002010-10-07T11:59:44.787-04:00Thanks Everyone!!! This is for you...We have been in three continents over the past month doing our thing...photography. We love it! A huge thanks goes out to all of those who treated us like family in your amazing cities and countries. Our photography workshop tour started off in St. Petersburg, Florida when we kicked off the Westcott Top Pro Tour. Then traveled across the pond to Cologne, Germany where we checked out new products, met some cool new people and did some street shooting with Hasselblad Master: Joao Carlos. Next we flew to Dublin, Ireland to shoot with the lads from Dublin Strobist Group. Steve and Del from Dublin were totally excellent for letting us stay at their crib and coordinating everything. While in Ireland, Mikey had an opportunity to travel to some sleepy fishing villages for photos with John and Brian (too many pints at Lowry's Bar in Clifden). After Ireland we set off for San Francisco and did a workshop for a small group of really cool cats. We did some street shooting in Chinatown, Twin Peaks, The Condor strip club, and Jack Kerouac alley. Josh was cool enough to let us use his studio for the workshop. From San Francisco we took Amtrak up to Seattle...we are going to kick around some video ideas with our friends at Blackrapid. Thanks for your support and taking the time to shoot with us!!!! This video is for you guys:
We did it, well sort of. Not the best shots we've ever taken but some keepers. Michael has been hitting the Rosetta Stone a little harder than expected and used a couple more than five words. We actually got some people to pose and jump which was great so don't be too harsh! In any case, the main point behind this video is to show that you shouldn't put any barriers between you and taking pictures. We are in a foreign country, we speak barely any spanish, and taking pictures of people on the street is just not common, but even that is not going to stop us from taking pictures. You don't need hours of preparation, a professional model, a ton of photo gear or even a good day. Just lighten up and shoot!!!
Our Backpack Studio consists of:
Nikon D300 set at ISO 400 and 60th of a second
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 at f/4.5
Nikon SB-28 Speedlight set at 1/8 of power approximately 2 feet from the subject.
What we missed:

We thought we would have more time with each model, but they were not as cooperative as we'd like so taking a lot of shots was totally out of the question. We should have used a reflector on the opposite side to give some fill. We also thought that if we setup somewhere with great composition the "models" would just walk by and we would talk to them and convince on the spot, didn't happen. We actually had to chase them around Parque Lleras so our composition was a little off. Live and learn...what can we say.

Lighten up and enjoy the shots!!!
Hey everybody! Mikey here, a few nights ago I went up to Mirador de Las Palmas to do a relax and shoot with Shawna, Matt and Johannes (Andy stayed home to do some retouching). Matt shot some video with his Nikon D90 and I thought it was so cool I decided to post it. Thanks Matt!

A little update: Andy and I have been busy shooting video in between our work schedule. We plan on going into seclusion this weekend to edit videos and map out a two week trip we have planned in the US sometime in July. So, stay tuned for more videos and our summer schedule for lightenandshoot.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7424098964306344476.post-4797987484042915782010-06-03T15:30:00.000-04:002010-06-23T17:58:45.334-04:00NEW VIDEO!! Michael is back from Estados Unidos...finally!! We decided to add a video showing the backpacker's studio and how easy it is to assemble! We also take two minutes and set up a speedlight on a stand. Part two will include a demo of the gear and different light modifiers, so stay tuned!

So what is the backpackers studio (remember I am going to patent this saying so watch out you terminology robbers)? The backpackers studio is our lightweight and extremely portable studio that has helped us so much that we want to share it with you. Through our thousands and thousands of dollars of gear purchased we realized one very big thing:

LESS IS MORE!

So with this new found knowledge we put together, the backpackers studio. Everything we need to be able to take the pictures we want with as little gear as possible.

All the links you need to buy everything we use is listed. I am going to list everything we have in the bag, and I am in no way implying that this is the Golden List. This is just what has worked out well for US and we thought we would share.

If you have any questions just leave a comment and I'll answer ASAP!!!

One very big note!! We signed up for amazon and bhphoto affiliate link thingydoodlemabobbers so we will make cash if you buy from the links below (the darker gray is a link).
We love these triggers (CyberSync CBT) and receivers (Cybersync CSRB), they fire every time. I'm sure there are other great brands but these things just do the job. I tried pocketwizards and they are simply too expensive and too big for my likes, but to each their own. Remember you will be a better photographer if your gear is not in the way of your shot!! You shoot with what you are comfortable with. Who cares what the neighbor has!! These work great for us.
Nikon SB-28 is our preffered flash. Why?? They are cheap and powerful We also have an SB-24 (in it's last throes), a Nikon SB-80DX (too expensive used but a great flash), a SB-800 (barely used, we should sell it and buy 3 more SB-28's) and a SB-600 (this is collecting so much dust we shoud give it away to science, their could be a cure for something in the dust. The flash is good, but NO SYNC makes it completely useless for us since we hate the slave adapters they break way too easily, but your mileage may vary).

We buy almost all of our flashes at pawn shops, craigslist and the amazon.com used department (whenever they have a good price)

An important note I want to make is that if you use radio triggers and shoot in manual mode, the brand of your camera or flash does not matter. You can fire a Nikon flash with a canon and vice versa!! The world can now be in peace at least when it comes to speedlight. You are not mated with any certain brand because of your lens investment!! YAY!!

The link is to a Nikon D300s because the D300 is discontinued. We love these cameras, the autofocus, weather sealing and ergonomics made it our choice. But to be honest, we love just about any camera from every brand that is available. We don't buy them all for lack of room and money. So read this and memorize it, might be a famous saying one day.

I don't care what brand underwear you are wearing, why should I care what brand of camera you are shooting with.

Ok, we love our small portable primes, and hate carrying around this gigantic beast, but we simply love the images it produces. For our backpackers studio we try to carry as little gear as humanly possible. And so this lens wins. The downside is that this sucker is expensive. So if you are on a budget I really like the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 (note: I only loved this lens after it was calibrated by Sigma, but I bought it used so this might have something to do with it. It also has a slight tendency towards yellow, but easily corrected in Post)
Our camera bag:

It has been a trusty friend, but it has a couple of major pitfalls for US! The first, the size is perfect, but since it has a weird shaped compartment, our larger lenses do not fit, which is a pain. The second, is the sling strap. It becomes uncomfortable after a while. Especially when the bag is full of gear. The final and what I consider the worst is the durability of the bag. It's just not as rugged as we need. But, we are rougher on gear than the normal person, so this might not be an issue to most!!

And that ladies and gentlemen is our Backpackers Studio. We do have other stuff in it like, gaffers tape, extra flash sync cable, batteries, Rosco gels and a flashlight. I will post all of the gear we have so that you gearheads can know it all, but this is what is ALWAYS with us, no matter where we go!!!

We've learned over the last couple of years, the lighter and less gear, the more and better photos you will take!!

Alright, buy whatever you need, shoot while it arrives, then when it arrives, go try the new gear and post some pics. We started a flickr group so that we can all post pics. Here's the link lightenupandshoot flickr group

Adios!!

Part of the entire lightenupandshoot philosophy is to know the boundaries of your gear and then go beyond them. The inverse square law or flash to subject distance video. It has so many names we decided to add another one - DEPTH OF FLASH EXPOSURE. This just makes more sense to us, so take it as you'd like. To us Depth of Field and Flash to Subject Distance have a lot in common. So much that it just computed easier if we renamed it.
Check out the video as we try to describe THE INVERSE SQUARE LAW in total lightenupandshoot style. See exactly how complicated this thing really is, but how easy to understand it should be with our new terminology...ok so maybe it's still complicated but we tried!
Now just to clarify, the measurements we give in the video are not exact. It is simply for you to be able to wrap your head around the concept that the closer the light, the less DOFE you have. The farther away the light, the more DOFE you have!
We are definitely not out measuring anything with a tape measure, but if you want to...you'll see it's close.
We try to teach, like we like to learn...so any association with reality might be left far behind...but in the end, we know what we're talking about...and hopefully you do as well.
If you have any questions, just leave a comment and we'll get back to you!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7424098964306344476.post-53634589039590315192010-05-11T14:43:00.000-04:002010-05-11T14:43:14.328-04:00New Website is up! Please HELP!!!!!Hello all you lightenupandshooters! For the past couple of months we have been working on a new website.

The blog has been extremely friendly to us, but we decided that since lightenupandshoot is more of a philosophy instead of just Mikey and Andy, we needed a place with more interaction.

The site is still in BETA, although very close to being finished. Everything is working including registration!

All suggestions are welcome, good or bad.

Our main goal is easy navigation, we know with the blog it is sometimes hard to find articles. Let us know if the layout is pleasing and everything is easy to find.

We also wanted to include a forum so that there could be more community interaction. You must register to use the forum, this way we can kick anyone out that is being unproductive to the rest of us! Let us know if there is a topic that you would like, or if we have to many. Again, any suggestion is positively received!

Thanks for being lightenupandshooters!
